Once again Europe Direct Leeds took a stall to the Leeds Loves Languages Festival, organised by the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies at the University of Leeds, in partnership with Leeds Beckett University and Routes into Languages.
The day started with the students arriving and browsing the various stalls before a welcome address and talks from Matthew Treherne (University of Leeds), Théo Munyangeno (Leeds Beckett University) and Caroline Campbell (University of Leeds ‘Speak to the Future’ campaign). They then moved on to A-Level conversation classes in French, German and Spanish, delivered by university tutors. This was followed by a careers talk from Mark Williams, CEO of Global Lingo, a translation services agency. Mark shared his experiences of working in different cultures in a professional context, spoke about the benefits of knowing different cultures and talked about why this is important for careers and employability.
The lunch break saw more students taking the opportunity to view the stalls. Europe Direct Leeds spoke to lots of people about our services – many were unaware of just how much we offer!
The afternoon was taken up with language taster workshops in Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Portuguese and Russian, followed by language students giving accounts of their time spent abroad as part of their courses.
The day was a welcome opportunity to promote our services and to network with university staff and other providers of language services.
