Tour de Leeds Libraries : Monday 23rd June – Friday 4th July
Popular local children’s author Tom Palmer www.tompalmer.co.uk will snap on his bicycle clips and cycle his way around all the libraries in Leeds as part of a special Tour de France author tour – on wheels!
The Tour de France is the third largest sporting event in the world, established in 1903. Set over three weeks and covering 3,500 km, teams compete for the yellow jersey in July each year. Twelve million spectators of all ages line the route to watch the famed publicity caravan and to support the cyclists. 2,000 journalists and photographers cover the Tour de France and it is broadcast to 190 countries by 85 TV channels ensuring a worldwide audience of three billion.
The Tour de France Grand Départ will start at 11.10am on the Headrow, opposite the Leeds Art Gallery, on Saturday 5 July 2014. Two hours before at 9.10am the publicity caravan will set off from the Headrow.
The caravan and the race will take the following route in Leeds
The Headrow to to A61 Sheepscar Interchange (via Regent Street)
A61 Sheepscar Interchange to A61/Leeds Ring Road
A61 Leeds Ring Road to A659 Arthington Lane (via Harewood House)
A659 Arthington Lane to A660 Leeds/Bradford Boundary (via Pool and Otley)
They will then leave the Leeds boundary and travel on to the Yorkshire Dales and end with a sprint finish in Harrogate late in the afternoon between 4.20pm – 4.45pm.
Stage 2 on Sunday 6 July will start in York at 11.00am and finish in Sheffield between 4.15pm – 4.45pm. Along the way it will pass through Knaresborough, Harrogate, Blubberhouses, Keighley, Haworth, Hebden Bridge, Elland, Huddersfield and Holmfirth.
Stage 3 on Monday 7 July will start in Cambridge and finish in London.
